A piece of Tanker 109, a Douglas C-54 Skymaster. Cut from the fuselage of N6816D, an aircraft from the type that flew one of the most remarkable operations in aviation history.

The aircraft

The C-54 is a four engine piston transport derived from the DC-4 and built during the Second World War. It was the workhorse of the USAAF and US Navy, moving cargo, troops and on occasion heads of state. The presidential C-54 carried Franklin Roosevelt under the call sign Sacred Cow.

Its defining moment came in 1948. During the Berlin Airlift every available USAF C-54 was pressed into service alongside Allied aircraft to supply a blockaded city by air. In just over a year they delivered 2.3 million tons of food, fuel and supplies.

This particular airframe later worked as Tanker 109. Tracing its full history took some doing, but an aircraft that ends up fighting fires has usually lived several lives before that.
