The aircraft

N665US started with Northwest Airlines, which was one of the earliest and most committed 747 operators, flying them across the Pacific for decades. When Delta merged with Northwest in 2008 it inherited the fleet, and this aircraft finished its career in Delta colours.

Delta retired its last 747 in December 2017, ending nearly fifty years of the type in American passenger service. The final flight was a farewell tour, and the aircraft were flown to the desert.

The 747 changed what air travel was. Before it, crossing an ocean was expensive and rare. Afterwards it was something ordinary people did. No aircraft since has had that effect.
