DC-6 PLANETAG TAIL# N90739 | MONKEES DC6 SUMMER OF LOVE TOUR PLANE
The Monkees flew on this aircraft during the Summer of Love. Cut from the fuselage of Douglas DC-6, registration N90739, an airframe with three distinct careers behind it.
The aircraft
The DC-6 was designed during the Second World War as a military transport, then reworked for the long range commercial market and delivered from 1946. It became one of the great piston airliners of the era.
N90739 lived three lives. It flew as one of American Airlines' Flagship aircraft. It later worked as an air tanker fighting fires. And in 1967 it carried The Monkees on tour, at the exact moment the band was one of the biggest acts in the world.
Very few aircraft carry a piece of pop culture history in their logbook. This one does.
