The aircraft

The first C-130A models were delivered in 1956, and the Hercules has been in production ever since. No other military aircraft has managed that. It flies today with more than sixty air forces around the world, Australia's among them.

The design brief was troops, medical evacuation and cargo. What made it endure was how far beyond that brief it stretched. Hercules airframes have served as gunships, aerial tankers, firebombers, search and rescue platforms and Antarctic transports, and the type remains the primary tactical airlifter for most of the forces that operate it.

Four turboprops, a rear ramp, and the ability to work from short unprepared strips. Simple ideas, executed well enough to last seventy years.
