A piece of TWA, an airline that no longer exists. Cut from the fuselage of Douglas DC-9-31, registration N976Z.

The aircraft

Trans World Airlines ran from 1930 to 2001 and was one of the big four American carriers for most of that time. Around 300 aircraft wore its livery over seventy years. Then it was gone, absorbed into American Airlines, and every TWA aircraft still flying was repainted.

That is what makes these tags different from most. The airline itself is finished. There will never be more TWA aircraft.

The DC-9 was the workhorse that made short haul jet service viable, rear engined, high tailed, and able to operate from airports that could not take larger aircraft. TWA flew them across its domestic network for decades.
