Titan II Missile LGM-25 / SM-68B

Not an aircraft. A nuclear missile. Cut from a Titan II, designated LGM-25C in Air Force service and SM-68B before that.

The weapon

The Titan II sat in hardened silos across the American midwest from 1963 to 1987, carrying the largest single warhead the United States ever deployed on a missile. Fifty four of them stood on alert for twenty four years.

What makes it unusual among Cold War hardware is that it had a second life. NASA used the Titan II as the launch vehicle for the entire Gemini programme. Every Gemini crew, including Armstrong, Aldrin, Lovell and Young, rode one of these into orbit. The missile built to end cities also carried the astronauts who made Apollo possible.

The type was retired after a series of accidents and the end of that generation of deterrent, and the silos were destroyed under treaty verification.

Why this is different

Material from a decommissioned strategic weapon system does not become available often. This is not aircraft skin. It is missile skin, from a vehicle that was either aimed at a target or aimed at orbit.
