The aircraft that built American regional aviation, and nobody outside the industry has heard of it. Cut from a Fairchild Swearingen SA226-TC Metro II, registration N62Z.

The aircraft

The Metro is long, narrow and unmistakable. Nineteen seats in a fuselage so slim that crews nicknamed it the San Antonio Sewer Pipe, after the Texas city where Swearingen built it.

It did the flying nobody else wanted: short sectors into small airports, feeding passengers to the majors, often at night in bad weather with two pilots early in their careers. Thousands of airline pilots logged their first turbine hours in one.

The type also worked hard in Australia, flying regional routes and freight for decades.

Nobody puts a Metro on a poster. But the regional network that made hub and spoke aviation work was built on aircraft like this one.

Choosing the Partial option

On a Partial tag the paint break falls off centre, so the split between colours sits in a different place on every single piece. The colours named in the option are indicative only. The exact position, proportion and shape of the break on the tag you receive will differ from the photograph, and no two are alike.

What you receive

  • One PlaneTag cut from the actual airframe of N62Z
  • Laser etched with the aircraft type and registration
  • Numbered as part of a limited edition, on its display card
  • Durable metal ring for keys, luggage or display
