L-1011 TRISTAR 500 - PLANETAGS TAIL #HZ-AB1 - ROYAL PLANE

A piece of a flying palace, finished in genuine 23 carat gold leaf. This tag is cut from the fuselage of Lockheed L-1011 TriStar 500, registration HZ-AB1. The gold is not a coating applied afterwards. It is the aircraft's own exterior finish.

The aircraft

Built in 1983 as JY-HKJ, this TriStar began life as the private aircraft of the King of Jordan and the Jordanian government. In late 2001 it was bought by Al Anwa Aviation to carry Prince Abdul Aziz Al Ibrahim and was re registered HZ-AB1.

The Prince had both the interior and the exterior rebuilt, turning the aircraft into a flying palace fitted out for a standard of travel almost nobody experiences. The gold leaf on your tag is part of that exterior.

The TriStar was the only commercial jetliner Lockheed ever built, which makes any piece of one scarce before you consider the rest of this aircraft's story.
