HAWKER SEA FURY FB.11 ARGONAUT SERIAL # 41H656803
A piece of Argonaut, race number 114, an Unlimited class competitor at Reno. Cut from Hawker Sea Fury FB.11, serial 41H656803.
The aircraft
The Sea Fury was developed for the Royal Navy in the closing years of the Second World War and became the last propeller driven fighter the Navy flew. It is also one of the fastest single piston engined production aircraft ever made, which is precisely why so many ended up on race circuits rather than in museums.
The FB.11 was the single seat fighter bomber variant, the main production version of the type.
Argonaut raced alongside Dreadnought in the Unlimited class at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, a class made up almost entirely of Second World War fighters, some stock and some heavily modified.
