The aircraft

The Victor was one of Britain's three V bombers, built to carry the nuclear deterrent, and the most visually distinctive of them with its crescent wing. As the deterrent role passed to submarines, the surviving Victors were converted into aerial refuelling tankers.

XL191 was built for the Royal Air Force in September 1961 and served with 55 Squadron.

Its most demanding work came in 1982. During the Falklands conflict, Victor tankers made the Black Buck raids possible, refuelling Vulcan bombers repeatedly across thousands of miles of the South Atlantic in what were then the longest bombing missions ever flown. XL191 was part of that effort.
