Folland Gnat T.1 XR572

Cut from a wing that hung above the MotoArt studio for eleven years. This tag comes from Folland Gnat T.1, serial XR572.

The aircraft

The Gnat is a small swept wing subsonic fighter built in the United Kingdom by Folland Aircraft. The design brief was unusual: make a capable fighter that was compact, simple and cheap enough to be built with the tooling available to less industrialised nations. Finland, India and Yugoslavia all bought or licence built it, and flew it in both combat and training roles. 449 were completed.

In British service the Gnat became a trainer, and then something far more visible. It was the aircraft of the Yellowjacks, and after them the Red Arrows, whose displays made the type famous well beyond aviation circles.

MotoArt's founder Dave Hall acquired this Gnat's wing in 2011 and hung it in the studio. It stayed there until 2022, when he decided to cut it into tags rather than leave it on a wall.
