From an airline that no longer exists, and an aircraft type that opened up short haul jet travel. Cut from the fuselage of Douglas DC-9, registration N8990E, flown by Eastern Air Lines.

The aircraft

Eastern was one of the big four American carriers, running the busy corridors down the eastern seaboard and into the Caribbean and Latin America. It collapsed in 1991 after a long decline, and everything it flew was dispersed or scrapped.

The DC-9 was central to that network. Rear mounted engines, a high T tail and built in airstairs meant it could work airports with almost no ground equipment, which is exactly what regional American flying needed in the 1960s and 70s.

Eastern's hockey stick livery is one of the more recognisable schemes of the era, and tags cut from it carry those colours.
