A piece of a freighter 747 that spent its working life carrying cargo, not passengers. Cut from the fuselage of Boeing 747 registration N522MC, flown by Atlas Air.

The aircraft

Atlas Air is one of the largest cargo operators in the world, and one of very few airlines that built its entire business around the 747 freighter. While passenger carriers were retiring the type, Atlas kept buying them, because nothing else moves outsized freight the way a nose loading 747 does.

N522MC worked that job. Long sectors, heavy loads, and the kind of utilisation that wears an airframe far harder than passenger flying.

Freighter tags look different for that reason. Cargo aircraft carry simpler liveries and harder wear, so expect fewer bright colours and more evidence of a working life.
